ZOË & THE MISCHIEF

Zoë and The Mischief is currently an art rock trio with Japa Kaur on Bass, Keyboards and Back Up Vocals and Roman Zlobin on drums based in Baja California Sur, Mexico.

The Sound

Zoë & The Mischief serve up artful indie rock with catchy rhythms, unique lyrics & raw emotion. With her complex voice and badass guitar, songwriter Zoë Dearborn captures the cutting edge between rage & joy and makes it feel sexy & fun. Her songs are about painful relationships, power dynamics and the exuberance of rock-n-roll. Always feminist (and humanist) in their point of view, Zoë’s songs express deep empathy for the human condition that is at once heartbreaking & optimistic.

Influences

Influenced by 60’s art rock & folk, 70’s classic rock & 90’s indie rock. Influences include: PJ Harvey, Sonic Youth, The Breeders & The Velvet Underground.

The Story of The Band

In 2016 the band came on the scene in Todos Santos, originally as a wife & husband duo - with Lucas Bennett on Drums, and Back Up Vocals in an art & surf enclave near the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. Initially they performed as a trio with bassist Tony Wheyland. In 2018, Tony left the band and Zoë & The Mischief officially became a duo. Like the White Stripes, but reversed. They have become "local legends" - known for their inventive gigs and exciting performances - on tortilleria rooftops, at skate board parks or overlooking graveyards.

In 2018 they took a road trip mini tour up the west coast of Baja to San José, California to perform a public gig at the feet of the great Tara Mechani, a 17 foot robotic female Boddhistva made of recycled metal, a burning man favorite by artist Dana Albany.

In 2017, 2019 & 2020, Zoë & The Mischief performed at the Tropic of Cancer Concert Series, a music fest in Todos Santos hosted by Cordovas and in 2019 they were invited to perform in the Songwriter Series at the Flora Farms Mango Barn in San Jose Del Cabo.

From 2018-2020, they held a residency at Jardín Alquimia in Todos Santos, hosting a monthly art, rock & dance party featuring guest musicians, and epic dance parties DJ’d by Zoë.

Zoë Dearborn Solo

Zoë Dearborn also has a solo musical project where she is crafting recordings of her quirky & soulful folk songs and acoustic versions of her rock songs. In November 2020, she released the lyric music video (shot in beautiful Southern Baja) for the acoustic version of her song, Child Inside, a nostalgia-soaked anthem in honor of the inner child featuring a chorus of 15 children.

HOLLY & ZOË

Experimental musical collaborations between myself and Holly Mae Haddock (aka: Team Bright)

Open Up The Space (2014)

This song was created via Holly Mae’s project called 7 X 7. We created the song in 7 passes total back and forth to each other living in different countries. Holly in the US and me in Mexico.

That I Am (2013)

This song was created based on a project inspired the Werner Herzog film The 5 Obstructions. A project were we were gave ourselves 5 parameters within which to create a song.

1) Write and record a whole song in one day

2) Use autotune

3) Holly creates the music

4) Zoë creates the lyrics, melody and vocals

5) Find a way to put the separate pieces together

Start From Where I Am (2005)

In this collaboration, Holly Mae and I were discussing our frustrations and insecurities with music making, and then we decided to turn those feelings into a song of self-approval!

Borderline (2004)

In our first collaboration, Holly Mae and I decided to write a song using 5 obstructions (or limitations).

  1. Write and record a song in one day

  2. Choose 3 words at random from the dictionary to incorporate into the song

    1. Dictionary

    2. Catheter

    3. Borderline

  3. Use arpeggio chords

  4. Use only acoustic instruments

  5. I can’t remember the last one!

Women Awakening Song/ Cancion de Las Mujeres Despertar (2018)

And for our most recent, and most ambition collaboration yet, Holly Me and I teamed up again on a musical project with over 80 women at Women Awakening/El Despertar de La Mujeres, a bilignual women’s summit at Cuatro Vientos in Todos Santos. Holly and I wrote chords and a melody, that included verses, a chorus and 2 different bridges to accommodate lyrics that we workshopped with the group - we wanted them to incorporate their lyrical impressions from the 9 different female-led workshops that we had all experienced together over the weekend. The result is a 5 minute song in both Spanish and English.

Here is a video I put together that shows the highlights of the process, the audio is the finished song that we all sang together at the end of the workshop:

Here is the audio recording we captured at the end of the workshop:
